Flying By (Alone) Songtext

′Twas noontide of summer and next time of the night
And stars in their orbit shone pale and still alight
Of the bright and cold moon lightning in the sky
Starbeams on the wings passed me flying by

From a chapel where I've not been
And suburbs where I have not seen
And southern soil I could not bring
My precious from the common spring
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow I could not awaken
My heart which sighs at the flames
Golden all I lost, I lost alone

From the thunder and the storm
And the cloud that took the form
Of a demon in my view
When the rest of heaven was blue

′Twas noontide of summer and next time of the night
And stars in their orbit shone pale and still alight
Of the bright and cold moon lightning in the sky
Starbeams on the wings passed me flying by

Then in my childhood in the dawn
Of the most stormy life was torn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still
From the torrent or the fountain
From the red clay of the mountain
From the sun that round me rolls
In its autumn shades of gold

From the thunder and the storm
And the cloud that took the form
Of a demon in my view
When the rest of heaven was blue

'Twas noontide of summer and next time of the night
And stars in their orbit shone pale and still alight
Of the bright and cold moon lightning in the sky
Starbeams on the wings passed me flying by
