The captain climbed aboard the silver ship and flew away
Leaving only memories of another sunny day
The ship explodes beyond the shining skies
And all the children scream and close their eyes

I wonder why
The spacemen never seem to age and die
I wonder when
The astronauts will be back here again

Once there was a time when it was new
For astronauts to walk in space for you
And be filmed at the moment of their birth
And gaze with staring eyes at planet Earth


All the little men
Are dressed in suits and armour once again
Marching away to war
Bobbing up and down along the shore

We stood and watched the future fade away
Leaving only pictures from another sunny day
And fifteen million people parked their cars
And were indifferently staring at the stars

The stars were different colours than before
And nothing looked the same way anymore
The colours turned the astronauts to clay
The line of cars began to move away


I wonder why
The spacemen always seem to age and die
I wonder when
The astronauts will be in space again
Again

And you and I will be the human race again
