MacPherson’s Rant Songtext

Farewell ye dark and lonely hills
Far awa beneath the sky
MacPherson′s time will naw be lang
On yonder gallows tree

Sae wantonly, sae dauntinly
Sae rantinly gaed he
O' he played a tune and he danced it aroond
Then I′m below the gallows tree

It was by a woman's treacherous hauns
That I was condemned tae dee
And upon a ledge on a window she stood
And a blanket she threw ower me

Sae wantonly, sae dauntinly
Sae rantinly gaed he
O' he played a tune and he danced it aroond
Then I′m below the gallows tree

Well, some hae come tae see me dee
And some tae buy my fiddle
But before that I dae part wi her
I′ll brak her through the middle

Sae wantonly, sae dauntinly
Sae rantinly gaed he
O' he played a tune and he dauncit aroond
Then I′m below the gallows tree

Well, he took his fiddle in tae bathe of his hands
And he brak it ower a stane
Singing "Nae ither will play on thee
When I am dead and gane"

Sae wantonly, sae dauntinly
Sae rantinly gaed he
O' he played a tune and he danced it aroond
Then I′m below the gallows tree

The reprieve it came fae the Brig o' Banff
For tae set MacPherson free
But they brang the clock tae a quarter to one
And they hanged him fae a tree

Sae wantonly, sae dauntinly
Sae rantinly gaed he
O′ he played a tune and he danced it aroond
Then I'm below the gallows tree
