Carrickfergus Songtext

Carrickfergus Songtext

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
Only for nights in Ballygrand

But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I wings to fly

I wish I could meet with a handsome boatman
Who′d ferry me over to my love and I
My girlhood days bring back sweet reflections
The hours I spent long years ago
My girlhood friends and kind relations
Have all passed on now like drifting snow

So I spend my days in endless roving
Green is the grass so my belly is free

Oh to be back in Carrickfergus
And walk the mountain road down to the sea

But in Kilkelly it is reported
They have marble stones there as black as ink
With gold and silver I do support her
But I'll sing no more now ′til I get a drink

I'm drunk today and I could ask for aught
A handsome lover, a pal to dine

Oh, but I'm sick now and my days are numbered
So come all you young men and I′ll lay me down
So come all you young men and I′ll lay me down
