When the birds on the wire
Tell you summer is over
And nights by the fireside are waiting ahead
Will you then think of days of soft ice cream and lemonade?
To drive all the memories of cold from your head?
Now you can see past the trees from your window
The leaves have returned to the earth whence they came
Darkness encircles the day as she wakes up
Will you ever see the sun shine again?
Ice cream and lemonade
Sandals and swimming
And memories of summer will have to be strong
For winter soon drives away thoughts of things that you do
From where we are sitting, the winter seems long
Those cool summer dresses remind you of magic
Of days before winter brought colors of gray They′re folded and told to be patient, along
With their mistress, to be rediscovered one day
Does that warm, woolen clothing protect you from winter?
Or does Jack Frost cunningly find a way through?
To chill you and fill you with thoughts of far-off places
Where snowplows and sleigh bells have no work to do?
