Young Man's Prayer Songtext

Young Man's Prayer Songtext
I was raised to the good church faith
My friends were likewise too
But the way I felt when the sermons were read
I cannot hardly say
But for twelve long years I would walk their way
Smiling but confused
It′s not what was taught that really bothered me
It's the methods that were used
Oh, God, did you mean it to be this way?
All these assemblies and all these pre-planned prayers
And the man on the stand, he′s a man, he's just like me
He says he knows it, but I doubt if he really does
Oh, Lord, were you crucified for that?
Did you mean us to make a big business out of you?
Oh, Lord, everybody's gettin′ fat
But when you died, you were young and poor
Now as the sermon ended, I would walk on home
My friends still with me but I was all alone
For I was deep in thought and I was deep in doubt
Still trying to figure what it was all about
Oh, God, did you mean it to be this way?
All these assemblies and all these pre-planned prayers
And the man on the stand, he′s a man, he's just like me
He says he knows it, but I doubt if he really does
Oh, Lord, did you mean it to be like that?
Did you mean us to make a big business out of you?
Oh, Lord, everybody′s gettin' fat
But when you died, you were young and poor
My friends were likewise too
But the way I felt when the sermons were read

But for twelve long years I would walk their way
