My father worked in a shirt and tie
The factory floor was the place he felt alive
An old dust coat of ink and brown
Machine that roared as he pushed the lever down

And watched him as he worked

My mother cared for the broken few
She filled their plates and did all she could do
She'd hurry home to work some more
To smooth the sheets, to tidy up the floor
And I would feel the warmth
From everything she made here with her hands
And we would see this home
As the center of a map, a rock to stand

He grew the crops of the family life
Delivered fruits to his children and his wife
Then out of nothing, he lost his place
Things fell apart, a feeling of disgrace
And he would often wake and ask her
"Have I given all I can?"
And felt we looked at him
To ask, "Is he the measure of a man?"

And now I work in the counting house
I manage life, but only just about
I really can't complain at all
My kids, my wife, the beauty of it all
But all that I can see
Are a thousand little problems in my mind
