Samuel Beckett Songtext

Samuel Beckett fought the Germans
All through the Second World War
I saw him last month on a bus to Chicago
Don′t know what he's going there for
I saw him get on with the look of an eagle
I studied the lines on his face
He was reading about cricket and chess and Picasso
And running away from this place

If you see Sam won′t you say hello
And give him the best from me

You should have seen me with old Seamus Heaney
Taking the Amsterdam train
He seemed quite reclusive, not to say elusive
That comes with a Nobel Prize brain
He worked the whole carriage like Gaeburn on acid
He was hot with the coffees and the teas
When a gay Dutchman asked him for a ham and cheese sandwich
He looked so incredibly pleased

If you see Seamus won't you say hello
And give him the best from me

Oscar Wilde was a problem child
But he never had ADD
My diagnosis is full-on psychosis
From a jealous society
I saw him in Dublin buying a perfume
At the airport, Terminal B
I can't understand why such a talented man
Could get lost before duty free

If you see Oscar won′t you say hello
And give him the best from me

Now that this winter has hidden all sinners
Me, I′m just a travelling man
You're wondering why on that
Three giants of literature
Wandering across this long lonesome land
Just keep your eyes open
′Cause you never know who you might see

If you see one of them won't you say hello
And give him the best from me
If you see one of them won′t you say hello
And give him the best from me
If you see one of them won't you say hello
And give him the best from me
If you see one of them won′t you say hello
And give him the best from me
