The Line Songtext
von Parson Brown

The Line Songtext

When I first saw them standing all pale-faced and scared
With bodies a-tremblin′ and eyes that just stared
I thought I would go up and behave like a priest
Speak of redemption or just say the least
But they never moved

When I joined them a little later they didn't think I was new
′Coz I was just as brittle from being with you
I saw a few jaws clench when I mentioned your name
But they never said anything about all their pain
And they never knew
And they never learned
And they never cried

When the first one fell down I started to cry
And the second one was failing, preparing to die
The one just before me, turning his head
Said 'you'd best say a prayer, son, ′cause soon you′ll be dead'
And I never knew
And I never learned
And I never tried

Seeing your ghost here
Running through the dead bodies
Averting your eyes
From the mess that you made
And reaching me tired
Looking into my cold eyes
You just flinched at my question
Do you now feel betrayed
And I never knew
That you never learned
And I never loved again

So now I′m the first one
A new beginnig of the line
Overlooking the carnage I think
At least it was mine
