Hanging Tree Songtext

Hanging Tree Songtext

There′s a story down in Black Oak Harbor
Told about a hangin' tree
Where the birds don′t land and the Devil's hand
Saved a girl named Jessie White
In '49 an angry crowd
Killed her man without a trial
She whispered, "You′ll all be dead
Before tomorrow night"
And one by one those evil men
Who strung up Jessie′s man
Came to meet the flames of hell
Before they did intend
They were shot between the eyes
And a piece of rope around their neck
Proved to all the folks in town
That Jessie took revenge
Flying, she was flying
She'd never have to die
Die by a hangin′ tree
Laughing, she was laughing

The Devil did 'em in
He set her spirit free
He set our Jessie free
So Jessie came before the judge
Proud of knowing she′d done right
She didn't plead for clemency
She never gave up hope
When they pulled the noose around her neck
A bolt of lightning hit the tree
When they looked up, the girl was gone
There swung an empty rope
Flying, she was flying
She′d never have to die
Die by a hangin' tree
Laughing, she was laughing
The Devil did 'em in
He set her spirit free
Flying, she was flying
She′d never have to die
Die by a hangin′ tree
Laughing, she was laughing
The Devil did 'em in
He set our Jessie free
There′s a story down in Black Oak Harbor
Told about a hangin' tree
