Haggard Songtext

Haggard Songtext

I saw him downtown on a busy street
Looked kind of dirty but awful sweet
Now black with white socks on his feet
He was a little pup

He dodged the traffic as he crossed the road
He hopped the curb like a little toad
Just like he knew where he had to go
He headed straight for me

Inside my car, he felt right at home
Stuck in an old tape of country songs
When Merle would sing, he would howl along
I named him Haggard

God, he ate like a little hog
Played like a kid and slept like a log
And no one ever had a dog like Haggard

He let me know who was Mrs. Right
He growled a little but he didn′t bite
First one he ever let spend the night
We gave her rain

It wasn't long before we had a child
He smelled her head and then he sneezed a while
He played with her, I swear that dog would smile
And she would laugh at him

God, they ate like two little hogs
Played like two kids and slept like two logs
Little Kate and that big black dog named Haggard

As she got older, the school bus came
He cocked his head and he barked her name
The two of us crying in the rain
As she drove away

He′s been with us now for his whole life
He watched my home while I slept at night
He'd wake me up with a tender bite
And a cold, cold nose

He's got old now and he′s so fat
But he still tries to chase the cat
He died one night while on my lap
Watching Scooby-Doo

God, he eats like a little hog
Plays like a kid and sleeps like a log
And I know that you′ll love that dog named Haggard
