Cumberland Gap Songtext

1, 2, 1, 2, three
They say
Somewhere down south there′s a man who's headed
Sideways
Sling on his back not a nickle upon his
Last name
Just a few hymns and a voice he swears he′ll
Find someday
Says he'll check in the Cumberland Gap
Then he's headed on home

Was a man on the old frontier
Needed nothing but his own two ears
Carving life out of blood and tears
With his calloused hands

But the Lord had another way
Sent a wind upon the earth that day
All he had it was blown away
Like a hill of sand

As the dust settled ′neath the sky
Felt the scales a-falling from his eyes
He was washed in a blinding light
And a golden song

Saying boy I got plans for you
Crazy stories but they′ll all come true
Not a thing that you gotta do
But to come along

I can hear it when
They say
Somewhere down south there's a man who′s headed
Sideways
Sling on his back not a nickle upon his
Last name
Just a few hymns and a voice he swears he'll
Find someday
Says he′ll check in the Cumberland Gap
Then he's headed on home

And he sang as the years went by
How the Mississippi ran bone dry
But he prayed by the riverside
Till the heavens poured

How he spoke in an ancient tongue
Saw the crippled and a dead man run
Thought it strange when it first begun
Now it′s all that he knows

I can hear it when
They say
Somewhere down south there's a man who's headed
Sideways
Sling on his back not a nickle upon his
Last name
Just a few hymns and a voice he swears he′ll
Find someday
Says he′ll check in the Cumberland Gap
Then he's headed on home

He′s heading on home

He's heading on home

There he stood in the morning light
Wrinkled edges and his hair snow white
Looked at me, said there′s more to write
But it's yours to pen

Headed straight for the sun at last
Up the hill and he was gone like that
Could have sworn that I heard him laugh
From the other side

I can hear it when
They say
Somewhere down south there′s a man who's headed
Sideways
Sling on his back not a nickle upon his
Last name
Just a few hymns and a voice he swears he'll
Find someday
Says he′ll check in the Cumberland Gap
Then he′s headed on home
