John Henry Songtext

John Henry was a little billy boy
Who was no bigger than the palm of my hand
His mommy looked down at him and said
She said "Johnny will be a steel drivin′ man, Lordy Lord
Yeah, Johnny will be a steel drivin' man"

John Henry, he said to the captain
He said "Captain, I wanna hear you swing
I swing forty-nine pounds so my hips slow down
And I like to hear that cold steel ring, Lordy Lord
I like to hear that cold steel ring"

John Henry had a little woman
And her name was Polly Ann
John Henry got sick and he had to go to bed
So Polly drove that steel like a man, Lordy Lord
Polly drove that steel like a man

John Henry, he tore in the mountains
Until his hammer, it caught on fire
And the last words he heard John Henry say
He said "I want a cool drink of water ′fore I die, Lordy Lord
I want a cool drink of water 'fore I die"

John Henry was a little billy boy
Who was no bigger than the palm of my hand
His mommy looked down at him and said
She said "Johnny will be a steel drivin' man, Lordy Lord
Yeah, Johnny will be a steel drivin′ man"

They took John Henry to the graveyard
And they stuck him six foot under the sand
But by the time it′s rain goes rolling by
Johnny will do it any way he can, Lordy Lord
Johnny will do it any way he can
