Monument Park Songtext
von The Baseball Project

I′ve seen the shadows
Of the ones that came before
Larger than life
Too big to be ignored
When they talk about the greats
Mickey and Joe
Come rolling off the tongue
So easily you know
But my name just doesn't linger
Though I′ve got all these rings on my fingers

Before I was sent out to pasture
I had some room to roam
Out in the field
Once patrolled by Earl Combs
Bobby in the booth
He would watch me play
With words of praise
I miss him to this day

In the center stage you've got to be steady
So put me in, coach, 'cause I′m ready
As I glide between the statues
Slide between the stones
I′m standing in my field
But I'm standing here alone
Whistling past the graveyard
Long after dark
Singing la la la la
Out in Monument Park

Did you know that in the old days
They put those statues right on the field
So you′d stumble 'cross the legends
That couldn′t be concealed
By my time they moved Melfi
On the center field wall
Like sirens outside
I can still hear their call
Taunting me every time I play
But the voices never go away

As I glide between the statues
Slide between the stones
I'm standing in my field
But I′m standing here alone
Whistling past the graveyard
Long after dark
Singing la la la la
Out in Monument Park

Mickey Mantle raised the bar
That Choke and Joe set long ago
And though I'd like to take it even higher
History tells me no
Then one day
The boss called me on the phone
They had no place for me
So I knew it was time to go

It's hard to say what you truly deserve
I wasn′t best or the second
But I might have been the third
I think that I pass the test
So put my name out there with all of the rest

As I glide between the statues
Slide between the stones
I′m standing in my field
But I'm standing here alone
Whistling past the graveyard
Long after dark
Singing la la la la
Out in Monument Park

Singing la la la la
Out in Monument Park
Singing la la la la
Out in Monument Park
