(Intro to Age After Age) Songtext

Here′s another older song, um, that I wrote
It's, it′s a-, it's several bits of history woven together
I grew up in Missouri and I heard a story after some of the
There was some major flooding in, um, the Mississippi
And I heard a story about these two boys that were in this community that lived
They were down, um, near the river
And there were areas that were blocked by the sandbags
That were held up for years and years
And some of the flooding there, just in the last five years or ten years even
Has been so much worse than it had ever been before


So they were in this area and found themselves in quicksand of after the sand levee broke
And they went to rescue the boys, and they found the younger one
And they asked them, "Where's your big brother? When did you last see him?"
And the little boy said, "I′m standing on his shoulders"
And his brother had lifted him up
And just in an instant had this instinct, this gut instinct just to-
That there was something bigger than his own life that took care of his brother
Just the impulse to do that
And it′s pretty amazing to hear that

And after September 11th and all the craziness in the world
It occurred to me, that story popped into my head
And I'm just thinking about the vision that we get from either the mistakes or the-
But anything that′s representing the seed that falls and dies
And all of a sudden, you have a new place to, um
To find life and to, to have a vision you didn't have before
So this image of standing on the shoulders of the ones that have gone before you
And I just kind of put it together with images from the Reformation
And from our early American history and present day, so-
