As We Started to Sing Songtext

As We Started to Sing Songtext
I consider the rain and button myself
They′ve closed off the river so I lean on my fist
The weight of the day bends the trees tall and narrow
Through curtainless windows I shout at the sparrows
At Regent's Park Station I missed her arriving
I was watching the diplomats looking for clues
Cursing it all I felt guilty inside
So I let the ink from my memory dry
She showed me her fingers all drained of her blood
They were so pale they were almost blue
She uttered the words back on her 21st
And by her 23rd they all had come true
As we started to sing I looked over her shoulders
The language was one I could never quite get
I foolishly thought that the pride I was feeling
Could build me a home but the concrete won′t set
My voice fills the room of sleepy St. Patrick's
I remember her whispering in old Notre Dame
Forced my hands in my pockets, walked home through the docklands
Past gallows and chimneys and fried chicken stands
Autumn's body is restless, it′s smooth and it shimmers
All lit up by winter stage lights
The city saluted her childlike belonging
She unstitched her dress late at night
She′s already too late, I sit in the window
And look at the house of the poet now dead
Slowly I read and I dream of her soft look
To murmur quite sadly how her love had fled
And when I saw her the weather, sensing occasion
Became achingly bruised and then desperately wild
We walked up the only hill in the city
Her palm like the toy for my orphan child
She showed me her fingers all empty of promise
They were so pale they were almost blue
She cried out her warnings, I tried to ignore them
But now I can see they are true
And I remember the day she was looking away
I remember the day she was looking away
Looking away, looking away
Looking away, looking away
They′ve closed off the river so I lean on my fist
The weight of the day bends the trees tall and narrow
Through curtainless windows I shout at the sparrows
At Regent's Park Station I missed her arriving
I was watching the diplomats looking for clues
Cursing it all I felt guilty inside
