There are some experiments that should be done only on a computer
And lighting a fire in a crowded room is clearly one of them
If the peoploids are able to contain
Their fear and move at a calm speed
Then they are able to evacuate the room in an orderly manner
Clustered around the door
They gave one another enough space to
Allow a steady stream to pass through
If people try to leave a crowded room too quickly
They push up against one another and become jammed around the doorway
This is a panic state
The time taken for a room to empty of people
Initially decreases if people move faster
But above a certain threshold speed
Corresponding to the appearance of a panic state
The emptying time increases as people try to go faster
If the peoploids try to move at speeds greater than this
The outcome is chillingly different
Converging at the doorway, the crowd
Of peoploids press against one another


And friction takes hold
The peoploids become locked shoulder to shoulder
Unable to pass through the door easily even
Though it stands open in front of them
The crowd panics and jams
So although each peoploid is programmed to try to move faster
This panic state appears in a fairly abrupt transition
Once the peoploids try to move faster
Many nightclubs are dark enough to begin with
And once smoke starts to fill the half
It can become impossible to see more than a meter or so ahead
Under these conditions, people do not
Even know in which direction to run
Pelding and colleagues wondered what might happen then

For faster speeds, this time rises steadily
The faster the peoploids want to go

Of non-equilibrium phase transition
Between a relaxed and a panicked state
