Checking Out Songtext
von Protomartyr

Meet me in the lobby
Climb off the catafalque
Rasping locusts in the evening
Residents chewing funeral shrouds

I′ve seen the marching orders of The Oaf Brigade
They're winding circles in the parking lot
When they′re not brutalizing
Their empty heads fill with doubt
And me, I'm checking out

Going no contact with reality
Deadbeat dads on extended stay
Defeat injustice on behalf of Heaven
Like your kids, don't let them get away
And me, I′m checking out

Watch out, might get your arm broke
Reaching for what is yours
In this version of Hell
See the venal are thriving
In this version of Hell
They own all the empty rooms
In this version of Hell
The alarm keeps repeating year after year after

The only peace, the seconds between
The heartbeats of the guns
The only action allowed
Is whether you buy something or do not

What can a coward do?
I′m checking out
Keep your eyes averted
I'm checking out
Pull the covers over
I′m checking out
And when time flows backwards
I'll be welcomed back again

The misery dogs are barking
But don′t you be afraid
We are all out in the fog, reaching
Stumbling between immensities
When you were born
You carried a light with you
And when you found me, you found a wretch
Who needed desperately to see ahead

They say this is a wheel
And we are all nailed to it
But when you were born, I knew hope
Now I can see a path and where it goes
We'll walk this road together
Hand in hand while we can
But you′ll have to hurry on
Soon you'll hurry on alone
