Irreplaceable Songtext

Irreplaceable Songtext

You slipped your fingers down my backbone
Mapped the history of no hands before
Said you feel untouched
How did you survive out here?
It′s a strange thing to learn
How to want with so little evidence
You left the door unlocked
And I tried not to be grateful for it

Don't call yourself a copy
You aren′t even close to replaceable
I keep finding your inventions in the corners
A tissue box, a code for leaving the nest
We laughed at the laundry, left it in place
No clean lines between what needs washing and what gets worn

Eight years as a good soldier
Parading virtue like a weekday shirt
I learned how to act and how to watch myself acting
But you gave me something I have to lose to know
I've ridden your hurt, dug through your desk drawers
Bathed in whatever tub you filled

Don't talk about substance stand-ins
They wither beside our language
All the scavenger hunts, snow-stained clues
The dare to be seen, the animal games
I keep the evidence on the sheets
Let the confessions float in the hallway air
There′s a red death somewhere, sure
But I only replay the unsaid parts

(If you were born to take you under)
I′d use what's at hand, not tell you the plan
(My point is I always hold the laugh just before it lands)
Meet me in your well-kept graveyard
Watch satellites blink defiant

It wasn′t easy to let you in
The keys too cold, regret too loud
But what we shaped won't shrink back
Even when shame starts to circle
Let′s keep breaking in
Until the locks are ended entirely
Entirely

It wasn't easy to let you in
The keys too cold, regret too loud
But what we shaped won′t shrink back
Even when shame starts to circle
Let's keep breaking in
Until the locks are ended entirely
Entirely
You aren't even close to replaceable
This body remembers what it wasn′t given
And that′s a fact I keep
