Don′t care conditions only arise during design
They are never present as a result of analysis
Once the circuit is built the output is
Always either zero volts or five volts
A logical one or a logical zero
There are not three outputs: zero volts
Five volts, and don't care volts
Don′t care arise only in two cases: when the designer truly does
Not care what the output provides or when the input will never occur
When the designer truly does not care what the
Output provides a don't care is appropriate
If an input can never occur, a don't care can be used during design
If the output is critical to safety, you must
Be very careful using don′t care conditions
For example, suppose the system you′re designing controls
A safety critical component and receives a BCD input
If you receive a non-BCD input then something is going wrong somewhere
Instead of a don't care condition you would want to revert to a safe
State output and have a separate circuit create a warning signal
