Washington Square Songtext
von Marilyn Maye
Washington Square Songtext
From Albany through ol′ K.C
To California's coast
They′re talkin' 'bout a famous place
And they say it′s the most
I′ve got a story to convey
If you've got the time to spare
I′ll tell you how I made my way
One day to Washington Square
I thought I'd take a city break
Make the New York scene
I tried to find a place to go
To change the same old routine
I grabbed a cab
Ran up a tab
Till I hardly had the fare
In Greenwich Village I got out
Made straight for Washington Square
The air was filled with love and song
There′s freedom ev'rywhere
I get the feeling I belong
Cause I found happiness there
Yes, I contend the living end
Is to live without a care
I′ve seen the light, the world's all right
Right here in Washington Square
I sent back for my swinging group
Piano, drums and bass
And as we played, each sound we made
Seemed to rock the whole place
We knew this was the scene for us
And we dug the whole affair
We've got a home, we′ll never roam
Far from Washington Square
Well, you can pedal or bike
Or take the turnpike
Go good old U.S. 1
You can come by plane or train
If you like ride a bus or walk in the sun
Just make New York by hook or crook
And then when you′re finally there
Get in the march beneath the arch
Make it to Washington Square
Come on to Washington Square
You gotta get to Washington Square
Make it to Washington Square
To California's coast
They′re talkin' 'bout a famous place
And they say it′s the most
I′ve got a story to convey
If you've got the time to spare
I′ll tell you how I made my way
One day to Washington Square
I thought I'd take a city break
Make the New York scene
I tried to find a place to go
To change the same old routine

There′s freedom ev'rywhere

Cause I found happiness there
Yes, I contend the living end
