Clara, as did all female friends
Her sister as her Marie Antoinette
Old ties and flower in her hair
She said that about a year ago
When daddy went away to Mexico
It changed the colour of her eyes
I didn′t know if it was a lie
But I believed her then

We drove down by the sea
'Cause Clara liked the smoke but the water was cold
She held me with my ice cream cone
Then leaned over to me and said
"There′s a monster living under my bed
Though it's fun
He is a friendly beast
He keeps me company
And lulls me to sleep
Step into the night"


Come over and see
What the ferryman and me
Have made out of the old tees
A tiny ark
To hold all your toys
Your favorite toys
Long out of harm's reach
The world is cruel
And needs to reform
So now a great storm
Will lay the ground for a restart
All aboard
Hear the ocean roar
Come the great downpour
And drown in salt light

Next night around four or five
I heard Clara crying yet again
Went in and sat down by the bed
Petals still on her fussy head
Held her hand as if to say, "I understand"
She smiled
We stayed there ′til the sun rose
