Too Much Compassion Songtext

Too Much Compassion Songtext

He didn′t teach. He didn't tell people what to do, in the sense of
Spiritual practices. I mean, I was doing a lot of stuff when I went
To India. I thought I was a good yogi. And I was meditating. All I
Can tell you is when I got there and took one look at him, I couldn′
T even remember my name, you know. I never sat again. I never did
Another asan, you know. All that stuff fell away. Because I was
Seeing love. I was in the presence of love that I had never imagined
I could feel. I knew that what I was feeling was special. That it was
A gift. That it was grace. I knew that nothing I could ever do could
Earn that love. Or could win that love. Or create that love. It was
So transcendent, because it was so intimate. Everybody there felt the
Same way. Every single devotee of Maharaji's had their own
Relationship with him. Completely their own relationship. They had
Their own Maharaji. My Maharaji is what I'm talking about, but
Somebody else will tell you a whole other story. But it will always
Come back to this love. And sweetness. And he didn′t want anything
So he wasn′t selling anything. You want to come, you came. You want
To go, you go. You want to come back, you come back. He wasn't doing
Business. So you couldn′t buy his attention, either, if he didn'
T want anything. So it was only when you were real, when you really

Were in touch with that longing, that you could really connect with
Him. That was the way he taught. You know, half the time we were with
Him, it was heaven on earth. But the other time, we were ready to
Jump in the river behind the temple. And it was only three inches
Deep. If he didn′t look at you for a couple of days, forget it. Hara-
Kiri. Where's my sword? If he didn′t throw a banana to you, because
People were always bringing fruit, and fruit was always flying in all
Directions, if you didn't get your banana that day, you know, you
Start to shake, you know, and twitch, you know. When I read my diary
And I saw the way I used to think, oh, I can't believe... I′m telling
You, you have no idea. The trips I would do on myself, like, I′d see
They were about to give tea. Somebody would have to hold the cups and
Then give the cups to the people, right? So I thought, "Okay, they'
Re about to give tea. I′ll get up and help. No, I shouldn't get up and
Help. That′s just my own selfish desire to help. I won't help. I′
Ll wait until he asks me to help. No, I should help. It's okay to
Help. It's good. It′s service. I′ll help. No, I guess I shouldn't do
That. I want it to come from deep. I don′t want it to be a selfish
Desire." And on and on and on about everything, all the time, all the
Time, more nonsense like this. So what would happen, he would say, "
Krishnadas, bring the tea." Or he'd say, "Krishnadas likes to serve
Tea." I mean, nobody would know that I′m there agonizing whether I
Should get up or I shouldn't get up, I should do this or ... When Ram
Dass left India, I was free to see Maharaji in my own way. For the
First time since I had met Ram Dass all those years before. Before
That, with Ram Dass around, we all kind of saw him through Ram Dass′
S eyes. Not all of us, but some of us. And I remember the first time
I went to the temple by myself without anybody else, Maharaji was
Sitting out on the cot, and I was sitting on the other side of the
Courtyard all by myself. Because Ram Dass always kept a distance. He
Always didn't want to crowd Maharaji. He wanted to keep a distance
Right? That was his way he thought about it. I'm looking around, and
It′s just me and him. And I′m sitting across the courtyard. And I'
M thinking, what′s wrong with this picture? So I very tentatively got
Up, kind of like pretended I wasn't really walking across the
Courtyard, you know. And I just sat down in front of him. He looked
Down at me. "Theek. Okay." And then went on with whatever he was
Doing. And I went, "All right, I made it. Yeah." All right. Flexing
My muscles, sitting up a little straighter, right? And that was the
Beginning of me developing my own relationship with Maharaji
According to my own dim lights, you know. Just whoever I was, that′
S what my relationship with him was. That's what it became. From that
Point on, I became more close to him in my own heart, in my own mind
I allowed myself to love him in a simple, emotional way, which Ram
Dass tried not to do in many ways. I just let myself get into it
Because that′s who I was. And he responded to that. He allowed me to
Be who I was in relation to him. And he just kept playing with me
And it allowed me to feel close enough to him for that to happen
Something that was causing me to self-destruct was allowed to start to
Blossom only to be uprooted by his grace. You can see how he
Precipitated the whole thing. The teasing, freaking me out, making me
Nuts, making me paranoid. He's trying to get rid of me, send me back
To America. All this stuff. Finally, I just started to disintegrate
And this thing, the same thing came back from those old days. And
Then once it was up and running, he just pulled it out and threw it
Away, pulled that weed out. This is how he taught. He didn't teach
He did. He does. In Tibetan Buddhism, there′s something they call the
Bodhisattva Vow. And basically what this is is that a being has
Worked and worked and lifted himself to a place where he no longer
Has any personal desires. There′s nothing more he needs to accomplish
. He's fulfilled himself completely, completed himself. He′s ready to
Enter into total oneness with the universe. But instead of doing
That, he looks out and he sees that there are beings that suffer
That feel pain. He knows he's one with all these beings. He′s not
Different. And so their pain becomes his pain. And he vows not to
Enter into that oneness forever until all beings are free of that
Suffering. In order to do this, these great beings cultivate
Compassion. They practice thinking of others and feeling what others
Feel. And by doing this, they develop the strength to resist that
Vortex of love that they're more than ready to be dissolved in. These
Are the true gurus. Maharaji had his own way of saying things. One
Day he was walking with his devotee Dada, and he said, "Oh, Dada
You know, I could have been a really big saint. I could have been a
Really big saint, Dada, but I had one fault, one fault." Dada said
"What was that, Baba?" "Too much compassion." Maharaji had nothing
He owned nothing. He collected nothing. He had a blanket and a little
Cloth around his waist. Everything that flowed towards him flowed
Through him and out to other people. The main practice in India is
When you go visit an ashram, first you′ll sing or you'll do some
Seva, some service, and then you'll get food. But with Maharaji, it
Was the opposite. The minute you came to the temple, you were fed
And he would say, "You can′t talk to a hungry man about God. First
Feed and then sing to God." And how many different types of hunger
Do we carry with us all the time? We want this. We want that. We
Want all these things. These great beings have the ability to
Provide us with these things and satisfy our hungers in every way
To lift us up and make us strong. To show us how to live our lives
In a holy way and a way of caring for other people and caring for
Ourselves. Too much compassion. He couldn′t keep anything for
Himself because someone else needed it. He needed nothing. He gave
Everything to his last breath. He wore his body out giving away
Giving, giving, giving. Every day we go through this same process
We want to open. We try to open, but we don't know how. It was only
My mistake that I thought he was outside of me. A guru is not
Outside. The guru is within our own hearts, just as God is within
Our own hearts. You don′t need to run to India. You don't need to
Try to find somebody to love. All we have to do is look in the mirror
. Maharaji was my mirror, then and now.Jai Aziha Ram Jai Jai Hanuman
