A beautiful girl with eyes so bright
Her heart alight, she told me a tale one night
A story that chased away the darkest plight

On New Year′s Eve, the snow falls down
A little girl walks barefoot in the town
With slippers too big, she lost her way
Across the street, as carts sped away

Her feet now purple from the cold
She's walked all day, no matches sold
She huddles close in a street corner′s bend
Afraid to go home, where beatings might end

Her frozen hands reach for a match
Against the wall, a flicker to catch
A flame ignites, a warmth she feels
But fades away as coldness steals


With another match, a table appears
An oozing goose, filling her with fears
It leaps towards her, fork and knife in its back
But the match fades, dreams turn to black

A third match lights a Christmas tree
Candles ablaze, a sight to see
She reaches out, but the match dies out
Candles become stars, her fear's about

With a final match, her grandmother's near
In a halo of light, she′s nothing to fear
The child begs to join her, in peace she′ll roam
She strikes all her matches, turning night into foam

With her grandmother's embrace, they rise in the light
No cold, no hunger, no fear takes flight
Come morning′s light, the child's found dead
But with joy in her heart, she joins her grandma instead

In each of us lies a little match girl′s flame
A spark of hope in life's enduring game
Though the world may seem cold and bleak
Her light within... our strength we seek
