By the time that I made 19 years, all the wars were lost
A smoldering stillness lay over the land I wandered out across
Companions came and went their ways, it was easier alone
I watched people folding the banners away and quietly heading home

With no reflection in the mirror

They took me to a commune farm where everyone smiled
They were pure and kind and sure
I felt their goodness surrounding me and headed for the door
I got a ride with a gambler in a cool black Jeep, he shared his box of thrills
All the memories are given gifts from the way to somewhere else


And I dream of sunlit highways woven into the hills
The haze bleached and stoned
Like a harvest risen towards the sun
Cut back down to the earth
Where is everybody gone

Now the bullets and the passion and the money are spent
Gone with barely a word
The golden dream faded away
The pictures browned and blurred
I still see shining cars floating and all the miles I burned
We went farther on than we ever should and only half returned
