Nowhere Left to Run Songtext

Twenty-nineteen was the year
Mother Nature called our bluff
She said the rate of human death ′round here
Is not nearly enough
You should've ended fossil fuels
And replanted all the trees
Because now you can′t go anywhere
In your Hummer SUV
You should've chosen better leaders
Or at least just tried to stop them
When they said the only thing holding us back
Is a sense of moderation
Now the spin rooms have gone silent
There's no spinning what is done
In convention center morgues
With hordes in shrouds from Amazon dot com
We′re the grandchildren of Egypt
On the couch binge-watching Netflix
While the lonely die in hospitals and prisons and park benches
I am keeping track of days
By how often I have to shave my underarms
And I hear car alarms echo from city streets I dare not go

But the rain
Came down
In LA
April showers
People idled in their vehicles
Smoking weed eating nonperishables
With the windshield wipers on
Humbly greeted the gray of the dawn

When Mother Nature waves her wand
She sends down on us a curse
It′s like flu nineteen-eighteen except I read that one was worse
But don't get too optimistic
Lest you end up a statistic
Just to keep things in perspective
I read it′s like two nine-elevens in New York
At the fork
In the road
Another chapter of our history comes to a tragic close
All the fish drown in the water
All the rest drown in their lungs
You can go out on the balcony
But there's nowhere left to run

But the rain
Came down
In LA
Soft and hard
People idled in their vehicles
Smoking weed eating petrochemicals
With the windshield wipers on
Humbly greeted the gray of the dawn

All I know is your hand is still wrapped around mine
And my existential side cries
So what we all die
I know we′ll all soon be together
Singing songs in sunny weather
Taking in the air that's better than it has been in forever
