Supersede Songtext

Supersede Songtext
Cookie cried for three days
′Til she couldn't cry no more
She ate the fridge and jumped the bridge
And wound up floated on the shore
The children they all pointed
At another painted skull
And somebody asked, "Can I take a picture?"
Well, the heat down here is brutal
It′s hard to do what's right
The locals shout, "You won't burn out
If you don′t ever shine too bright"
I wish I was in your back pocket or in your arms tonight
I wish that I was loud so you could hear me
Oh no, what else must I be?
It′s all inside my head I guess
But it reminds me
That I need you, honey I need you
There ain't nobody who could supersede you
We′re not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
Now the streets are paved with petals
A parade is coming through
It kinda feels like royalty
'Cause everyone′s in blue
And yellow flowers falling
From every window too
Falling at the feet of such a coward
Oh, the mayor's a-kissing babies
He′s almost way too kind
We're filled to the brim with honest men
They're just way too hard to find
So stare into his public eyes
And watch his clock unwind
And find him old and drowning in the deep end
But oh no, what else must I see?
It′s all inside my head I guess
But it just reminds me
That I need you, honey I need you
There ain′t nobody who could supersede you
We're not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
Yes, I long for a hickory morning
With a waltz and trumpet flare
I′m doing my best to recover from what
Time cannot repair
I'm sick of all this solitude
And pre-rehearsed despair
My eyes are a hundred miles away from sleeping
Well, I wish you′d write a letter
Or telephone to me
This place is dark and there ain't a spark
Of who I used to be
So the sick hearts of the unloved
Tell the brave souls of the sea
"We′re all closed up
Why don't you come back when we're open?"
But oh no, what else must I be?
It′s all inside my head I guess
But it just reminds me
That I need you, honey I need you
There ain′t nobody who could supersede you
We're not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
There′s a cracked and pale mirror
That's hanging on my wall
The church bell rings and the choir sings
I can hear them from the hall
Now you might not believe it
But there was no fire at all
We danced for seven days wishing for water
So Graydon tells the fortunes
They line around the bend
A dollar for your problems
And five to know the end
They come from miles around
Just like the other ones
They come from miles around
Just like the other ones
But oh no, what else must I see?
It′s all inside my head I guess
But it just reminds me
That I need you, honey I need you
There ain't nobody who could supersede you
We′re not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
Oh no, what else must I see?
It's all inside my head I guess
But it just reminds me
That I need you, honey I need you
There ain't nobody who could supersede you
We′re not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
I′m a lone wolf, what else must I be?
It's all inside my head, I guess, but it reminds me
That I need you, honey, I need you
There ain′t nobody who could supersede you
We're not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
A simple sidewalk painter says his life is such a bore
He spends his time with a jug of wine and a pallet on the floor
He screams, "Heaven, take my eyes because I can′t paint no more"
Honey, sometimes I feel just like his colors
I'm gonna go down to the ocean, gonna fill my boots with sand
The next time that you see me, I′ll be a much more grounded man
So go and do whatever it is you do and I'll do what I can
And when we meet again, you can try to know me
But oh no, what else must I see?
It's all inside my head, I guess, but it just reminds me
That I need you, oh honey, I need you
There ain′t nobody who could supersede you
We′re not such strangers
Honey, I need you right now
Yeah, they call me a pessimistic, but it occurred to me
That babies are born crying and dying is never free
I still can't shake that feeling that somebody′s watching me
I just thought that I would tell you
′Til she couldn't cry no more
She ate the fridge and jumped the bridge
And wound up floated on the shore

At another painted skull
