John White Songtext

John White Songtext
John White was born of Irish parents
Brought up and reared in the town of Leeds
Where he enlisted there as a soldier
His mother′s heart for him did bleed
His mother's heart for him did bleed
For one night in anger he struck a sergeant
And he fell a victim though not in war
Sentenced he was to three hundred lashes
Then the bugles sounded the alarm
The bugles sounded the alarm
The whip tore through his flesh that morning
It tore the skin clean from John White′s bones
And how the drums they did beat like thunder To hide his cries and to hide his moans
To hide his cries and to hide his moans
When this young man all cut and mangled
Had fallen lifeless down to the ground
His mother was weeping, his father in sorrow
Sad grief and anguish they did abound
Sad grief and anguish they did abound
So come sign and send a long petition
To England's king, the crowned head of wars
Pray never let another soldier
Die like John White of the Queen's Hussars
Die like John White of the Queen′s Hussars
Brought up and reared in the town of Leeds
Where he enlisted there as a soldier
His mother′s heart for him did bleed
His mother's heart for him did bleed
For one night in anger he struck a sergeant
And he fell a victim though not in war
Sentenced he was to three hundred lashes
Then the bugles sounded the alarm
The bugles sounded the alarm
The whip tore through his flesh that morning
It tore the skin clean from John White′s bones
And how the drums they did beat like thunder To hide his cries and to hide his moans
To hide his cries and to hide his moans
When this young man all cut and mangled
Had fallen lifeless down to the ground
His mother was weeping, his father in sorrow
Sad grief and anguish they did abound
Sad grief and anguish they did abound
So come sign and send a long petition
To England's king, the crowned head of wars
Pray never let another soldier
Die like John White of the Queen's Hussars
Die like John White of the Queen′s Hussars
