Gone Songtext

Gone Songtext
From the mailroom to the boardroom
Is a long, grinding journey
But it′s one I took on gladly
To make a better life for my family
And they all walked beside me
As I moved us along
Oh yeah
From 12th Street in the projects
To a Tuscarawas duplex
A hundred thousand air miles
And a golden sapphire necklace
But it only took a moment of madness
To throw it all away, all at once
And now all I had going for me, oh, is gone
Oh yeah
I was halfway up the ladder
Working ceaselessly
I was always told that was a man's responsibility
But you can′t spend that much time away from home
Without something going wrong
Oh yeah
And now all I had going for me, yeah, is gone
Oh, it's gone
One day at a convention
At a Midwest airport inn
Temptation beckoned to me
And like a fool I rushed in
She somehow stole my reason
And made me feel so young
And then a year went by before I said
"My God, what have I done?"
Now here I am with my collar up
Making one more trip
Everything I own's right here
In this shabby grip
I′ve got to try to make it back home
Or else spend my life alone
What have I got to lose
When all I had going for me, all is gone
You know it′s gone
When all I had going for me, oh, is gone
Oh, it's gone
From the mailroom to the boardroom
Is a long, grinding journey
Is a long, grinding journey
But it′s one I took on gladly
To make a better life for my family
And they all walked beside me
As I moved us along
