Django Songtext

In a café called The Moon and Sun, Django sang and played
To a crowd of lonely caballeros, drunk in that café
Yes, most would spend their pesos before the wage was made
But Django, he had other plans to aid his great escape
He was tired of earnin′ pennies for the stories he'd convey
Yes, most never heard the words he wrote when he went on the stage
So he′d head north to Juarez where he thought he'd have it made
And play his songs for gringos who flew in from the States
Or so he said

And Django's wife, Clarita, she needed him to stay
But she was more than just his woman, she loved him all the way
And Django was elusive, he′d hide behind charades
But she knew he didn′t mean it when he put on masquerades
Django was a poet in the sense he made mistakes
He made others see the lightness in the darkness of the shade
Though he said it was the tequila that brightened up the days
He had to get to Juarez, he would no longer stay
That's what they said

But Django often worried, would he make it all the way?
With the pesos and provisions that he′d worked so hard to save?
And what about them bandits? He'd heard they could persuade
Anyone into givin′ up what they'd take anyway
And two hundred miles of highway where death is wide awake
And no one dares that highway, not even rattlesnakes
He had to get to Juarez and he couldn′t be afraid
He'd make that trip tomorrow, regardless of the stakes
That's what they said

And his lovely wife, Clarita, she begged him not to tread
"You′ll never get to Juarez, it′s just too far," she said
"There's danger in this journey, it′s safer in my bed
The sun will surely kill you, no one will know you're dead
And I′ll never get a letter, with this I feel betrayed
And I'll never know the graveyard where your flowers should be laid"
He turned and said, "Clarita, wipe those tears away
Just as soon as I am able, I′ll send for you that day"
That's what they said

And the years went by, one by one, as time had turned to gray
With the memories that he left behind before he left that day
And the café hasn't changed at all since Django played
His picture hangs upon the wall with a caption and it said
"Make this mountain higher, I want to climb today"
And for the people of his hometown, that was Django′s prayer
And then in flew Clarita with a smile upon her face
"I′ve a letter here from Django and he's comin′ for me today"

That's what they said
That′s what they said
That's what they said
