On the Way Down Songtext

I pray to God this hopelessness doesn′t hinder me for long
And I pray and plead to some higher
Being that I leave no mess when I'm gone
Pay my debts and mind my business, leave my mark in style
Take my leave with no regrets, still alive in the soul of my child

And the current seems to have gained some strength
Since the last time I was caught in the strait
Oh, but you never really tell how deep down you′ll go
No, you can't recite your given last rites
'Til you′re surely on your way dead down

I sat and waited patiently for some soul to quench my thirst
And still here I sit silently, after some years it gets much worse
Oh, I wept and begged at my Maker′s
Feet for some poison so I could pass
And a blessing it was when he said no
As I've grown stronger with an empty glass

Oh, the wicked ways of this hell-
Spawned stream have finally heeded my call
Oh, but you never really tell if you stay clean or spoil
You can′t strap the last line to your will
'Til you′ve got your foot in the cold dead ground

All this life has given me, a pass to my own dear kin
All the time that I have spent in the rapture of some sin
Down and out, some days so cold, been drunk and stoned and spent
Frustrated child that I once was, that I have always been

And the current seems to have gained some strength
Since the last time I was caught in the strait
Oh, but you never really tell how deep down you'll go
No, you can′t recite your given last rites
'Til you're surely on your way dead down
