You watched my petals open
I watched you grow tall
Shedding old linings
Letting in sunlight
Out on the eaves the summer leaves
Green as they welcome you home


I hear we′re getting older now
They'd have to cut you down to count the rings in your body
I trace the lines by your eyes
One for every laugh and every smile
Inspired by the loves of lives that you have lived

Maybe they′ll plant you in a cemetery
A living thing amongst the dead
Sitting still in this silence
Waiting for them to lay your bed

You'll watch my petals wither
As you shed your leaves through fall
Brace our bodies for bitter weather
Warmed by the fire through the winter
In spring at ease amongst the trees
They bloom and welcome you home
