Construction Poet Songtext

Construction Poet Songtext
Welcome to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
Tonight, we are proud to present our New Faces series
Our first poet is a construction worker
Who is simultaneously erecting a high rise in midtown
And writing an anthology of his poems entitled, My Back Hurts
Please welcome, Gus Lobotomovich
Uh, hi, uh, well this is my first time reading in public
So, uh, I′m, I'm a little nervous, um
But, but, but I guess it′s better to
Be nervous and, uh, pursue your dream
Than, than, than sit around the house
Watching TV, drinking beer, and screwing everything in sight
At least I think so
Okay, uh, this first poem is called, Why Did It Have To Be My Hand?
Ow, my hand, I hit it
Shit, Christ it hurts
Jesus it looks bad
Why did it have to be my hand?
Thank you, um, thank you very much
This next one I think you'll relate to if you've ever owned a lock
It′s called, Where Are My Keys?
Where the fuck are my keys?
I had them a minute ago
Thank you, um, this next one is as old as the hills
It′s called, Mommy
Gimme a nipple, ma, gimme a nipple
Come on, come on, I'm an infant
Thank you, um, you know, we go bowling on Thursdays
And usually it′s a good time
But this Thursday there was an incident and I wrote a poem
It's called, Lane Six
I swear to God if this guy bowls
When I start to bowl, I′m gonna kill him
Thank you, haha, hey thanks, um
It seems that things are going well
I mean, I hope it stays that way
You know, they told me to banter with the crowd
And I, I really don't know what to say
So I′ll tell you how I got started writing
Uh, maybe it'll be an inspiration, you know, uh
Down at the construction site I used to take the guys' lunch orders
And I would write it down on a broken piece of sheet rock or plywood
I would write down their orders like
Turkey on rye with tomato, ham and cheese, no mustard
And then my writing career just took off from there
Okay, um, this one is called, In The
Reflection Of The All Too Powerful Moon
She sits in her chair, the chair she will die in
She rocks back and forth to the beating of my heart
I am glad I loved her as she gets up and walks into the reflection
Of the all too powerful moon
You know what, that one sucked, I′m sorry I was drunk
Yeah, I′m really sorry, let's get back to the good stuff
This one is called, The Beach Is Big
The beach is big
Where′s our blanket, where's our blanket?
A sea of faces, a million faces
Where′s our blanket, where's our blanket?
Oh, there it is
Thank you, uh, this last one is a classic theme with a twist
It′s called, Oedipus
I want to fuck mom and kill dad
But I don't wanna poke my eyes out
No, I think that part of the tragedy I'll skip
Thank you very much
Thank you for coming out and supporting me
Thank you, thank you
I gotta get back to the site now
Thank you
