The Street Songtext

The Street Songtext
Stories come and travel on
Nights spent with memory
As side by side friends close their eyes
And listen with sympathy
Each one of them has a tale to lend
As the table fills with dreams
Outside on the street it′s only as it seems
The sun comes up and it spreads the talk
'Round the table to a few
Who order up another drink
To the days they once knew
Each one of them means no harm
Thinks only his are true
Outside on the street there′s only what you know
The shoeshine man has a corner stool
It only costs a dime
He never cares if anyone's there
When he speaks of older times
He has lots of friends, most of them dead
Who come often for a shine
Outside on the street there's only what you find
Out on the street lovers beneath
Lots of lovers who stayed home
Together there to sit and stare
Wondering why they are alone
Not so long ago they were so sure
That their love would grow
Outside on the street there′s only what you know
Hotels with numbered rows of doors
To history
Where the lonely men relive again
All that they wish to be
The rooms for them, cold or warm
They have no sympathy
Outside on the street there′s only what you see
There are lots of ways it can be done
For those who want to pray
To anything that promises
Always to be the same
And never leave them behind
Like life when it must change
Outside on the street it never is the same
Nights spent with memory
As side by side friends close their eyes
And listen with sympathy
Each one of them has a tale to lend
As the table fills with dreams
Outside on the street it′s only as it seems
The sun comes up and it spreads the talk
'Round the table to a few
Who order up another drink
To the days they once knew
Each one of them means no harm
Thinks only his are true
Outside on the street there′s only what you know

When he speaks of older times
He has lots of friends, most of them dead
Who come often for a shine
Outside on the street there's only what you find
