Of mice and men and all the way to the bitter end
Will it ever end?
These four walls hold no comfort, no warmth
It′s all only the cold
I could show you a place that would make you sad
Where men stood proud but the sights reduce all
The most frightening thing of all
Is what's held in your head
I try to forget but the memory of war
Is stronger now than it was before
And when I fall asleep at night
I wake and reach for my gun
But there is nothing there
And there is no one there
It′s just another nightmare
From which I can't wake
The night is cold as the bitter chill bites
From the night, it's another one of those nights
Sleep doesn′t come easy now and when it does
It doesn′t last long


And these sleepless nights are all I have to show
No medal is worth its weight in gold
The scars on my flesh are nothing compared
To the nightmares of cold
I could almost be there, I could taste the air
Running so real through the killing fields
Machine gun fire, shredded by barbed wire
Then I see my friend and the nightmare ends
But will this nightmare never end?
Johnny was my only friend
We swore to be there till the end
Side by side for days we fought
Unending toil as we were scorched
And as I stared into his eyes
I caught his face, a bitter smile
Then he fell into my arms
And died right there in my arms
His blood was dripping from my hand
What I could not understand
Is why my friend so brave, so tall
Should be the one who's made to fall
I lost the best friend that I had
He died with pride, not all he had
His little boy will have to know
Why daddy won′t be coming home
