On the ramparts of a castle
High upon a hill
A new-crowned King looks down upon
Farms and shops and mills
Forest trees shelter
The harbour town below
Where tradesmen eke out a living
And sailors come and go
Every day they all just carry on


The king summoned his chancellor
"My funds are running low
The Queen must have the finest things
Champagne has to flow
My subjects, all must pay some more
Our coffers need to grow
Such great delight for my queen
With my presents she can show
Do as I ask so I may carry on"

Nervously the Chancellor
Responded to his King
"A raise in taxes will grow dissent
Rebellion it will bring"
"Raise the taxes," yelled the King
"What don′t you understand?
My Queen deserves great riches
Just do as I command!
We'll celebrate with a feast tonight, carry on"
