Writers on a Train Songtext

Writers on a Train Songtext

There were a bunch of writers
Travelling on a train
They stopped at every bush town
They found out on the plain
They stepped out on the platform
To a welcome from the folks
Drank beer with them in hotels
Laughed at all their jokes

When they tried to explain
The beauty of the written word
In every little town
The children came from school
Sang lullabies to them
As the train would slowly pull
Down the track into the distance
Across the barren plain
They′d drink some more in silence
On that journey on that train

They tried to explain
The beauty of the written word
A poem's worth a drink or two
A story′s worth the groceries
But a joke is worth a slap for you
On this journey through sweet misery

They'd slumber in the desert
Stir up in the hills
Pull the blankets over
To stop the winter chills
So rock-a-bye like babies
Let the train caress their backs
Rock them ever gently
Clackety-clack

They tried to explain
The beauty of the written word
They tried to explain
The beauty of the written word
