Southend Rain Songtext

My first memory of Mum and Dad
I was ridin′ on the fuel tank of a motorbike they had in the fifties
We were listenin' for the train
As we waited by the fisherman′s siding in the Southend rain

Dad had an old car, a Chrysler buckboard
When the creek was in flood, we couldn't get across
So he loaded my little sister and me in an old row boat
I remember the stale fish smell on his oilskin coat

Don't cry, sisters, I′m comin′ home soon
We'll walk on the sand, feel the south wind blow
And look back on all the years we′ll never see again
Can't wait to see you, Mum and Dad
You probably don′t remember that motorbike you had in the fifties
In the Southend rain

I was one of seven kids in an old beach shack
My brother went fishin' and he never came back
So Mum spent the next two years just starin′ out to sea
And our lives were left floating like
Flowers, all washed up on the beach

Don't cry, sisters, I'm comin′ home soon
We′ll walk on the sand, feel the south wind blow
And look back on all the years we'll never see again
Can′t wait to see you, Mum and Dad
You probably don't remember that motorbike you had in the fifties
In the Southend rain

Dad, do you remember that motorbike you had in the fifties?
In the Southend rain
