Extant But Inactive Songtext

Extant But Inactive Songtext
We got the blender, we got the towels
Monogrammed sheets from Aunt Rose and Uncle Al
Every fork in its proper drawer
And a closet too big for the things that we wore
(Guess it′s time to get some more)
You said, "Let's get dinner out, let′s date and make it fun"
But the only things open are McDonald's and Chevron
We talk about breakthroughs, put away some wine
We're not really that busy, we just kill all the time
And my mother asks how I′m feeling
She′s always seen right through my enthusiasm
Extant, but not quite alive
Thumbs tapping the table, watching minutes crawl by
We're yesterday′s newlyweds already feeling the burn
Just two ring fingers waving at a world that never learns
We split the difference on scented soap
You love Christmas in June and I suppose I'm learning to cope
Calendars full of things we don′t do or don't remember
Fondue pots, fond hopes, everything brand new, so tender
I talk in lists, you talk in flash and filigree
When did we become less funny than the nullnodes on TV?
I′m sure kids could help if they're sweet and well behaved
So why do we hate sleeping in this bed that we both made?
Your dad shows up to check the locks each month on the first
He wants to introduce us to some people from his church
Extant, but not fit to thrive
We owe back taxes, still technically alive
Everyone keeps toasting, why can't they be us
We′ve always got too many things to discuss
They told us to dance, but the song was all wrong
Before the paperwork, this used to be fun
If we have to disappear
And that does seem to be true
I′ll still disappear with you
If we've got nothing better to do
Extant, but nobody′s home
Two matching rings and the nice things we own
We keep getting older, that's to be expected
Extant, but inactive
Sometimes happiness is best left suggested
Monogrammed sheets from Aunt Rose and Uncle Al
Every fork in its proper drawer
And a closet too big for the things that we wore
(Guess it′s time to get some more)
You said, "Let's get dinner out, let′s date and make it fun"
