Engine 143 Songtext

Along came the F.F.B., the swiftest on the line
Running o′er the same old road just twenty minutes behind
Running to Seville town, headquarters on the line
Receiving her strict orders from the station just behind

Now Georgie's mother came to him with a basket on her arm
Saying, "My darling boy, be careful how you run
For many a lad has lost his life in trying to make last turn
But if you run your engine right, you′ll get there just in time."

Well up the road she started, against a rock she crashed
Upside down the engine turned and Georgie's breast it smashed
His head was against the firebox door and the flames was rolling high
I'm glad I was born for an engineer and seeing the road to die

The doctor said to Georgie, "My darling boy, lie still
Your life may yet be saved if it′s not against God′s will."
"Oh no," said George, "this cannot be, I want to die," said he
"I want to die today, my love, and who for to grieve?"

The doctor says to Georgie, "Your life may not be saved
Murdered on the railroad and laid in a lonesome grave."

His head was covered over with blood and his eyes they could not see
And the very last words poor Georgie said was, "Near my God to Thee."
