My Little Ole Home Down In New Orleans Songtext

My name is Albert Fulm
I′m a local moving engineer on the Southern Railroad and have been for the past 47 years
When I first met Jim Rogers it was at Meridian, Mississippi in the spring of 1927
And when I first seen him it was on a people platform, sitting on an express truck
And he was struggling to get tar
He was dressed in a stripy cap and a stripy jacket
Which at that time was traditional railroad men's wear
That′s what they wore
He had a guitar, bow tie, a thousand mile shirt and a package of wooled ins

Oh yeah, do you know what a thousand mile shirt is?
Well, it's just a polka dots shirt with low fine polka dots, white polka dots in the blue, blue cloth
And they said you could wear them a thousand miles without getting them dirty
They had a little bit of a detachable blue collar
You had it start and you could look pretty neat most in time
And that's what he had on when I first met him
And of course I made conversation with him
Since I was a stranger there and I knew he was a railroad man by well just general appearance
And it wasn′t long until we was wising off at each other

He was picking, I believe a song he was singing just to harmon it and sing it about, uh
I went down to the depot and looked up on the board
It was good times here, it′s better down the road
And I asked him then, was he going south on the Queen?
And he said, yeah, he was laid off sick and was going back dead hidden
And we had a long way wise off at each other, and we had a pretty good time
And wound up in New Orleans
And worked together for some time, and
From there we'd become good friends

I never knew that the place I grew is the grandest place on earth
′Til I roamed around from town to town, but now I know what it's worth
Listen while I′ll tell you 'bout the place I mean
It′s my little ole home way down in New Orleans

In the sunny South where the black boat flows, that's where I long to be
The Dixie land where the white cotton grows, is calling out to me
And soon I'll be in the land of my dreams
And that′s my little ole home way down in New Orleans

I′ve been East and I've been way out West, I′ve been around most everywhere
Now I'm heading South for a good long rest, I′ll be glad when I get there
All the wonderful things in the world it seems
Are awaiting for me way down in New Orleans

In the sunny South where the black boat flows, that's where I long to be
The Dixie land where the white cotton grows, is calling out to me
And soon I′ll be in the land of my dreams
And that's my little ole home way down in New Orleans

Yes, that's my little ole home way down in New Orleans
