Nevada′s got a highway that runs out East
Of Ely
Where the tumbleweeds
And wind can be a trial
Where a man can lose his senses
Counting posts on barbed wire fences
A sign says ain't no gas for 80 miles
Well he was standing at a turn out
I stopped to check my breaks out
He had a saddle and his rigging at his feet
I said I′m going down the road son
If you don't mind riding shotgun
Throw your gear in back., climb in and
Take a seat

Well his hands are rough and calloused from
Roping calves and taking dally's
Big ol′ broken knuckles outta place
Time and wind and weather had put their skills together
Drew a western road map on his face


Well he told me his life story
For 60 miles or more
I told him mine was on the downhill slide
And there wasn′ty much to tell
Just a lot of downhill hell
He said son. you need another horse to ride
And they're right there for the taking
Just find them kids and break ′em
Top hands don't give in ′til they try

You can loose 'em
But there′ll always be another horse to ride

He said up ahead′s a mailbox
And a big gate that they don't lock
The foreman there′s an old time friend of mine
Well just let me get my saddle,
He'll have a horse for me to straddle
And I′ll try to make the ranch by supper time

I said man it's been a pleasure

And I shook his rough old hands and said goodbye
